Τα αναπνευστικά συμπτώματα που σχετίζονται με το βρογχικό άσθμα, τη βρογχίτιδα ή τη Χρόνια Αποφρακτική Πνευμονοπάθεια, αντιμετωπίζονται συνήθως με τη συνταγογράφηση φαρμάκων αεροζόλ που προσλαμβάνονται μέσω δοσιμετρικών συσκευών (pMDIs) ή “puffers”. Μία δοσιμετρική συσκευή περιλαμβάνει το φάρμακο και το προωθητικό που μεταφέρει το φάρμακο στους πνεύμονες. Οι θεραπείες με αεροζόλ είναι αποτελεσματικές, γιατί δρουν γρήγορα και με ελάχιστες παρενέργειες.
Εντούτοις, επειδή οι τυπικές δοσιμετρικές συσκευές απελευθερώνουν μια δόση με ταχύτητα πάνω από 100 χλμ/ώρα [Newman, 1983], η αποτελεσματική χορήγηση του φαρμάκου στους πνεύμονες μπορεί να καταστεί δύσκολη. Για να είναι αποτελεσματική, η συσκευή πρέπει να πιέζεται κατά τη διάρκεια της εισπνοής, ώστε το φάρμακο να μπορέσει να φτάσει στο βαθύτερο τμήμα των πνευμόνων. Χωρίς αυτό τον συντονισμό, το όφελος από τη λήψη του φαρμάκου ελαχιστοποιείται, αφού ένα τμήμα του φαρμάκου εγκλωβίζεται στο στόμα ή το φάρυγγα και απορροφάται από την κυκλοφορία του αίματος.
